Bermuda, named after Spanish sea captain who founded it (Juan de Bermúdez), is known for its gorgeous pink sand beaches and clear ocean water. The sand’s pink tone comes from tiny pieces of coral and shell dust, and will keep your feet from burning in the hot sun. The island is located off the east coast of the United States in the Atlantic Ocean and most tourism occurs on the south part of the island where most of the hotels and private beaches are located. Some of the beaches in Bermuda are ideal for snorkeling, surrounded by beautiful rocky cliffs and coral reefs. The island is divided into parishes, with various beaches located throughout.
Horseshoe Bay Beach (Southampton Parish) – As the name implies, this pink sandy beach is shaped as a horseshoe. The beach is quiet in the morning hours, but can become very crowded with many tourists as the day proceeds. Horseshoe beach extends about four miles, but the main beach is only approximately a quarter mile long. Coves and wading pools are not far from the beach, offering an even further getaway.
West Whale Bay Beach (Southampton Parish) – Not only is this beach an ideal fishing spot, but you can watch for Humpback whales migrating to this beach near April. The location of the beach allows you to enjoy a beautiful sunset.
Tobacco Bay (St. George’s Parish) – Known for its snorkeling experience, Tobacco Bay was so named for the tobacco that was found growing on the beach years ago. The bay is bordered by limestone rocks, and the water is fairly shallow, making it safe for children. The beach offers snorkeling gear for rent or purchase, as well as concessions and other facilities.
Warwink Long Bay (Warwink Parish) – Located just East of Horseshoe Bay Beach, this white sand beach is fairly quiet and secluded, making it an excellent getaway. Coves, rocks, and shallow reefs are abundant on the bay making for beautiful scenery and privacy, but a tricky snorkeling experience. This beach has one of the longest shorelines of Bermuda.
Elbow Beach (Paget Parish)- The curve of the beach bears a resemblance to an elbow, hence the name. This more crowded beach is split into private and public areas. Kayak tours are available through Elbow Beach Hotel, and the calm nature of the water on this beach makes the experience ideal. Sand volleyball and snorkeling are other popular attractions on this beach.
