The Big Island is Hawaii is unlike the others in the Hawaiian chain, with the main tourist attraction being one of the world’s most active volcanoes, Kilauea. The Big Island is the youngest in the Hawaiian chain and by far the biggest. This island offers everything from lush rain forests to volcanic deserts, snow-capped mountaintops to beautiful black sand beaches. One of the most unique beaches in the state and one of the most popular is Punaluu on southeastern Kau Coast, which is covered with black sand, the result of eroded volcanic lava. Although this isn’t much of a swimming beach, it’s an unforgettable place to have a picnic and feel the course black sand between your toes. You might even seen some Hawaiian Green Sea Turtles basking on the beach.

In the popular area of Hilo, you will find two great beaches, Onekahakaha Beach Park with tide pools and inlets that are perfect for snorkeling, and Lelewi Beach Park, a shallow bay fronting Richardson Ocean Center which is the most popular snorkeling site on the east side of the island. Hilo has a wide variety of very reasonably priced hotels.

On the Kohala Coast, you find water sport rentals for kayaking, body boarding, snorkeling, scuba diving and more at Anaehoomalu Beach, next to the Waikoloa Beach Marriott, and you’ll find one of the largest white sand beaches on the island at the world-renowned Hapuna Beach, located adjacent to the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.
