Sunset on Capitva Island, watching from the Mucky Duck. Beach Maniac photo.

Captiva Island is a sister island to Sanibel on the Gulf Coast of south Florida. Captiva is off the beaten path, quieter and more secluded than most Florida beaches. If you’re looking for the bar scene, you can go to Fort Myers Beach to the south, for a more upscale family vacation head north from Fort Myers Beach to Sanibel, but for a true get-away-from-it-all vacation, cross the bridge from Sanibel to the north and you’ll discover the serenity of Captiva Island. This is a great place for sitting back in a beach chair and watching the sunset, casually browsing the beach for beautiful shells, or just hanging out with family and friends. And it’s an ideal location for a romantic getaway. Shorelines range from wide soft white sand beaches to slightly rocky coastlines. You can explore the backwaters of the Florida coast or rent bicycles, kayaks, canoes, pontoon boats, and fishing equipment or even book a charter fishing trip at the nearby Ding Darling Wildlife Refuge. Be sure to visit the quirky Bubble Room Restaurant and make new friends as you watch the sunset from the laid-back beachfront Mucky Duck.
