Dozens of participants splashed into the Gulf of Mexico Saturday, May 5, 2012, to compete and just have fun in the Southwest Florida Stand-Up Paddleboarding (SUP) Race. The sun was shining and the water was inviting as participants jumped onboard to participate in two categories – elite and recreational. Either way, it was a great opportunity to get wet, have a little exercise and meet a lot of people while stand up paddleboarding. Plus, proceeds from the day’s events – sponsored by BodyGlove – benefit Special Olympics.

Beach Maniac was on hand to take some pictures on a beautiful morning. The photos below are from the pre-competition meeting on Crescent Beach in the Times Square area of Fort Myers Beach and the start of the elite race:

Stand Up Paddleboarding is great for getting a full-body workout and helps develop the right set of muscles for other activities, such as cross-country skiing and snowboarding. While kayaking is great for both relaxing, exercising the upper body and enjoying the water and scenery, stand up paddleboarding puts you up high for better views of everything from birds to fish. And, as they say, it’s almost like walking on water!
