Black Rock, Kaanapali Beach, Maui – Photo by Bill Hurley

Kaanapali Beach on the Island of Maui has been named Hawaii’s favorite swimming beach in a survey of Facebook fans of Hawaii Magazine. And although it has been several years since I have visited Maui and had the great pleasure of staying on Kaanapali Beach, I have to totally agree. My wife Diane and I celebrated our 25th anniversary by staying at the Westin Kaanapali Ocean Resort on Kaanapali Beach, and it has remained right at the top of my favorite all-time vacation spots. Yes, this is Hawaii, so it is hard not be in awe of its all-around beauty. But for me, Kaanapali Beach had it all: clear water, colorful fish, lots of activities, great location for exploring the island, wonderful restaurants, beautiful resorts with great pools lining the shoreline, and a winding walkway connecting them. I could walk forever back and forth on that walkway, with the beach on one side and beautifully landscaped and maintained resorts, pools and open-air restaurants on the other side. Palm trees swaying, hammocks swinging, kids swimming and adults just relaxing. But my favorite location is depicted in the photo I took above. At the end of Kaanapali Beach is the iconic Black Rock, a 40-foot diving spot for daring locals and a fantastic swimming and snorkeling spot for visitors. It was the best snorkeling we experienced during our trip, even though we had also taken a catamaran snorkeling excursion to the Molokini crater. At Black Rock, you can take as much time as you like to swim, snorkel and then rest on the beach before going back in. Simply put, you are on your own schedule, and after a few days of exploring the island – including the Road to Hana and Haleakala volcano – isn’t a relaxing day on the beach really one of the best parts of a Hawaiian vacation?
