Like so many Florida beaches, Daytona is wide, expansive and beautiful. But what truly sets Daytona apart is the unique parade of cars, trucks, carts, bikes and even Segways that roam up and down on the hard-packed sand. Driving is permitted on 11 of the 23-mile long beach area, and four pedestrian-only zones are found at various intervals. As told by the Daytona Beach Convention and Visitors Bureau, the beach is up to 500 feet wide at low tide and is perfect for sandcastle building, cycling, jogging, fishing or just relaxing in the sun. While at the beach, watersports enthusiasts can grab a surfboard, launch a boat or head out for a parasailing adventure. The Atlantic Ocean is perfect for swimming especially during the spring and summer when temperatures range from 74 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit (23 to 27 degrees Celsius). The average annual air temperature is 70.3 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius).
What they are saying about Daytona Beach:
TripAdvisor:
Known as party central for college spring breakers or a hangout for leather-clad motorcyclists, Daytona Beach might seem a somewhat intimidating destination. Put your preconceived notions aside and allow us to introduce you to another side of Daytona. In recent years the city has made a huge effort to change its image. This is evident in the multi-million dollar clean-up and renovation of the beachfront area which includes Ocean Walk Village. This exclusive development of hotels, restaurants and shops boasts its own Caribbean-themed water park. In addition, a number of child-oriented museums and theme parks have opened, drawing more families to the area.
Virtual Tourist
Daytona Beach has a population of about 70,000, but the beaches, bike weeks, and racing draw some eight million visitors each year. The sand at Daytona Beach is hard packed and suitable for driving cars. In fact this is one of the rare beaches in the US that allows and encourages cars on the beach. Some of Daytona’s earliest fame centered around auto racing on the beach, and the Daytona Beach Road Course, located on the sand, hosted races for over 50 years.
Frommer’s
Daytona Beach is a town with many personalities. It is at once the self-proclaimed “World’s Most Famous Beach” and “World Center of Racing,” a mecca for tattooed motorcyclists and pierced Spring Breakers (though it lost its Spring Break crown to Panama City Beach), and the home of a surprisingly good art museum.
