Sanibel Island, Florida, is one of the true treasurers of the Gulf Coast, offering something for visitors of every age. Walk along the beach most times of the year and you’ll be amazed at the millions of shells washed ashore from the sea. Once you start to stoop down and pick them up, you’ll be overwhelmed by the choices of perfectly shaped shells to put in your basket and take home. Be sure to wear sandals as you crunch mounds of smaller shells underfoot. But Sanibel offers much more than shells. A quiet island, you won’t find large chain restaurants or big box stores here, but you will find a wide variety of local shops and restaurants, along with a wide variety of hotels and resorts lining the shore, some large and many quaint and personal. Be sure to bring your bike or rent one to enjoy the many miles of bike trails throughout the island. Fort Myers Beach is a short drive from Sanibel if you want to spend a day or night where there are more crowds. But if you’re planning to drive to Fort Myers Beach in the spring be prepared for a long wait to get over the bridge.
